Below are Case Studies from Recently Funded Projects.
Facing the Challenge I’m a Dad
Run by Tresillian Family Care Centre and Uniting Care Burnside
Eight fathers attended this one day workshop and all fathers were already connected with Burnside. The majority of the group time was experiential learning focusing on the fathers birthing experience and the importance of the changing role of fathers. Photoshop was used to help reflect on their relationship with their own father and the relationship they have or would like to have with their own children. The afternoon session focused on the importance of reading, spending time with children, positive parenting principles including limit setting and behaviour management strategies.
Cool Kids Cool Parents
Run byThe Parent Council for Deaf Education
By using a strengths based and parent empowered approach to workshop delivery, parents had the opportunity to come together to share their experiences raising a child who is deaf or hard of hearing. Parents were guided through a range of topics pertinent to their experience, including activities covering:
Communication challenges and Strategies
Why do siblings fight and Fight Free Families
The Emotional Journey, and
My Strengths, My goals
Parents generously shared their experiences and drew upon their own resources and knowledge to create a great pooled resource of:
Books
Websites
Support networks
Helpful and recommended organisations
Worthwhile seminars and workshops
Community opportunities
The backgrounds and experiences of each parent were quite diverse and subsequently, parents were not only acknowledged in their own situation, but inspired by the different approaches and learnings.
Parental Feedback:
‘ I have made a connection to another family and we have already organised a get together in the school holidays. This workshop has provided me with the opportunity to meet new people and to add to my support network which is an invaluable gift which would never have happened if I didn’t attend this workshop. Thankyou for running it.’
‘It has been hard to know where we fit in, but I really felt everything you were talking about was very relevant to us and really appreciated the opportunity to attend’
‘it was very insightful sharing stories with other parents’
As well as funding parenting initiatives, the Strengthening Families Resourcing Parents Inner West Small Grant Scheme has established a number of ongoing projects:
The Resourcing Families Website
Distributing parenting Resources to the Inner West local libraries
The Groupwork Practice Review Consultation (GPRC)
This initiative provides parenting groupwork facilitators opportunities to
reflect on their practice work,
support and further develop the groupwork skills and strategies that are already working well for them, and
explore and experiment with new skills and strategies aimed at making a difference future groups.
- The provision of evidence-based parenting programs such as Triple P - Positive Parenting Program or Magic 123
